The United States Constitution is the document that we follow as a country to provide us law and order. It is what is considered a “living document,” which means that it can and has been changed, or amended. The Constitution was created after the Founding Fathers determined that the first guide, The Articles of Confederation, was not working well.

The Constitution begins with what is called a preamble, or introduction, explaining why the Constitution was created. It is then divided into groupings, called Articles. Details about the Articles are called Sections.

Shortly after the Constitution was written, changes were made to make sure that the government and the people understood the rights of the citizens. These first changes became known as the Bill of Rights, which are also the first ten amendments to the Constitution.
