- Abraham Lincoln gave his Second Inaugural Address, or speech, about a month before the end of the Civil War.
- Congress had passed the 13th Amendment ending slavery. Two-thirds of the states still needed to agree to the amendment to the Constitution.
- Abraham Lincoln did not want slavery to continue in the United States.
- Abraham Lincoln did not want the United States to break apart into two separate countries.
